Twelve hours ago, Rachel had gotten a text from Danny.
Babe, so sorry about missing the flight. 5-0’s shot to hell: Steve’s arrested for killing the Gov, Kono is under investigation by IA, Chin is with HPD. Trying to help. Call u when I wake up. So much more.
“So much more”, “more than ever” or just “more” were things she and Danny used to say to each other all the time. It was their way of saying I love you in ever increasing measure. She missed that. She was glad to have it back. And she loved that he knew it would make her uneasy that she left Hawaii without him. And that, as busy and as tired as he must have been dealing with all of the current Five-0 drama, he sent her a message before he got some much needed sleep. Her phone rang.
“Daniel.”
“Hey, Rach. I’m so sor-”
“Don’t even mention it. What are you going to do?”
Even across five thousand miles she could hear how this was aging him. “I’m staying in touch with Chin, seeing what HPD knows. Steve’s innocent I just have to find a way to prove it. No clue yet about Kono but Jenna is helping me with that.”
“I think we picked the worst time to fly back here.”
“Look, home is wherever you guys are ok? Don’t doubt that for a second.”
“I know. Even more.”
Danny smiled. “More than you can imagine.”
“Danno?”
“Heeeeeeeeeeeyy, Monkey! How’s it being back in Jersey?”
“Mommy’s taking me to Grandpa’s house today.” Danny could practically feel her smile.
“She is, is she? Well when you get there you give everybody a kiss for me ok?”
“I will, Danno. When are you coming home?”
“As soon as I can, Monkey. We had a case go sideways here and you know what that means.”
“It’s a case that needs one of the world’s greatest detectives?”
“And who is that?”
“You.”
“Thanks, babe. I knew you wouldn’t let me down. I want you to remember something: Danno loves you.”
“I love you too, Danno.”
Detective Williams sat back in his office chair in what used to be known as Hawaii Five-0’s headquarters. His best friend stood accused of homicide he didn’t commit, Kono was on the hook for money they borrowed to save Chin’s life, Chin was back with HPD, the only person in office with him was Jenna and his wife and two children were miles away. He had never felt lonelier in his life.
~~~
“How are you feeling?” Danny asked from his prone position on his couch.
“Fine, Detective.” He could picture the grin on Rach’s face.
“You’d tell me right? No morning sickness, no backaches, nothing?”
“Nope. You have bigger problems.”
“Oh really?”
“Some guy sent over a ridiculous bouquet for me today with a deliveryman who sang, ‘The Most Beautiful Girl In the World’.”
“By Prince? You love that song.”
“I know. What I’m saying, Daniel is...”
“You’re leaving me for this upstart?”
“Mm-hmm. Funny story: his name’s Daniel as well.”
Their laughter was soft as it mingled across the phone lines, before Danny let out a tired sigh. “I miss you. This case just-man! I don’t even know how-“
“Don’t. There’s a reason you are where you are, Daniel. You’re good at what you do. You’ll figure it out.”
Danny sighed contentedly. Her faith in him was soothing and empowering all at once.
~~~
His phone rang at 11:30 p.m. She should have been asleep long ago.
“Danno?” She sounded impossibly small and scared.
“What’s the matter with my princess?” he asked in his most soothing tone, unconsciously trying to calm her. She sobbed.
“Monkey? What is it?”
“I-” She hesitated.
“Hey, hey, hey. This is your Danno, ok? You can tell me anything.”
“I had a dream that you couldn’t find your way home and you were stuck in Hawaii forever and ever and ever and I went to school in New Jersey and the kids laughed at me and said I had no father and there was a boy, Danno, and he was really mean-” The recollection made her start crying again. This was the second week that they’d been in Jersey and he in Hawaii and the fact was killing him before his baby’s mind was churning up these unpleasant dreams when he was too far away to rock her back to sleep.
“Monkey, do you know where my home is?”
“Hawaii?”
“Hawaii? Are you kidding me? Hawaii? No, Monkey. I want you to listen very carefully. Ready?”
“Mm-hmm.”
“My home is wherever you and your Mommy are. Where’s my home?”
“With me and Mommy.”
“That’s right. I was raised in New Jersey and yet what did I do when you and Mommy left for Hawaii?”
“You quit your job and moved to Hawaii too.”
“That’s right. And why did I do that?”
“’’Cause we are your home?”
“That’s right. And do you think anything could keep me from finding you guys?”
“No.” It did his heart a world of good to hear her speak more confidently now.
“Why?”
“Because you’re a very good detective.”
“That’s right. And the only reason I’m not with you guys right now is because Uncle Steve needs a very good detective to help him with a problem. But as soon as we solve that problem, I’ll be on the first plane out to you, ok?”
“Ok.”
“Danno loves you.”
She sighed deeply and contentedly, “Love you too, Danno.”
“You can go back to sleep now, honey?”
“Can you sing me a song?”
“Can I sing you a song, are you kidding me? I’d love to!” He took a breath and began,
Sleep my child and peace attend thee,
All through the night
Guardian angels God will send thee,
All through the night;
~~~
“Coming!” Danny yelled. Was nothing sacred on this island? He was trying to catch up on some sleep on a Saturday morning and someone was banging on his door like their life depended on it. If you were in trouble you dialled 911: those people were awake and not slightly depressed by how many hoops you had to jump through to clear your team mates of crimes they may or may not have committed and were not torn in two because they were needed in both Hawaii and New Jersey.
“Alright, alright, I’m COMING!” Danny rolled off his bed, bleary eyed and headed for the door.
“What’s the emer-” And suddenly his weekend just took a turn for the better.
“You said home was wherever we were, right?” He practically mauled Grace and Rachel in his attempt to answer that question. Grace looked from one parent to the other.
“Does this mean home is in Hawaii again?”
Danny looked to Rachel, who smiled and nodded. Danny scooped his little girl up into a fierce hug with one arm while the other pulled Rachel back into an embrace, three sets of arms forming a rough circle and a perfect refuge.
I like that Rachel and Danny understand each other as well as they do and good for her for realizing that she and Grace need to be where Danny is.
A truly lovely story :):)
Unfortunately, the only Danny/Rachel icon I have for now is a regrets one and none of Danno and Grace. For shame of me!
I LOVE this fic!!! It's exactly how I hope season 2 plays out for the Williams' family even though I know it probably won't happen like this. : (
It's also a refreshing change of pace to see a less angsty version of Danny/Rachel than what is usually written. Like others have said in their reviews, I too am a romantic. I like HAPPY endings not unrequited endings which is most of what I have read of this pairing. So YAY for you in breaking the pattern!!! : )
As for the fic itself, my favorite bits were as follows: I thought that Danny and Rachel's way of saying "I love you" was unique and so CUTE, and I like that Rachel understood that Danny had to remain in Hawaii to help his fractured team especially Steve. The way Danny explained his reasons for staying behind to Gracie was ADORABLE, and I like that you referenced Danny's family in Jersey. I also thought it was equally ADORABLE (this fic is so full of fluffy CUTENESS--SQUEE!!!) that Danny was concerned for Rachel and both of his children. IMO, the best scene of all was when Danny comforted Gracie after her nightmare and sang her to sleep, and the reunification of the Williams' family back home in Hawaii was the icing on a very SWEET and YUUMY cake.
THANKS for this wonderful treat!!! I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. : )
this fic is so full of fluffy CUTENESS--SQUEE!!! Awww thx! This is what happens in my heart any time Danny has Grace in an ep. He is never hotter to me than when he's being the doting Dad/protective Dad that he is.
I like that Rachel understood that Danny had to remain in Hawaii to help his fractured team especially Steve. Rachel is a Big Girl. I think the only way she'd throw a tantrum abt this (once she finds out why D missed their flight) would be if she was having a pregnancy hormone flare up.
Really, THANK YOU for such lovely comments. I'm as close to blushing as I am able to get. *g*
I think, too, that the prospect of Danny moving back to NJ is something that's been haunting Steve a long time -- it's the elephant in the room that Steve has steadfastly ignored because as long as Rachel was with Stan, she wasn't going anywhere, and neither was Grace -- which meant Danny was staying put. Danny and Rachel back together -- that's the elephant starting to stomp around the room; I think that's why Steve was so squirrelly about the bagged lunch, and why he sounded so... unsure of his place in Danny's life anymore when he asked him how long this thing with Rachel had been going on, and "were you ever going to tell me?"
Steve of all people realizes the value and centrality of family -- heck, he's the one who's usually the first to remind Danny or Chin or Kono of this. Steve would never try to stop Danny from leaving, though I think he'd wish with all his heart that he *wouldn't*, as he'd be losing his family all over again. I think what he wants most of all is to have them want *him* to be a part of them as much as he wants them to be a part of his family, and that's something that has to come from Danny and Rachel (I think Grace is already there).
I think in some ways, Rachel may be more aware of Steve's feelings where her family's concerned -- she's seen how he is around Danny, how he is around Grace, she saw how he was around them at the "Loa Aloha" dinner, she's probably heard from Danny about what all Steve's done to aid and protect him along the way, especially with the Matty situation. Steve probably couldn't have been approved for Grace's school pickup list without Rachel's agreement, and I suspect Rachel's involvement in Grace's happily calling Steve Uncle Steve -- though maybe that's just to help her with the loss of Matt.
Steve reached out to Rachel from the get-go, during the stakeout in her house in "Heihei" -- didn't try to patronize her, instead tried to reassure her while accepting her sense of worry about Danny's unavoidably dangerous profession as a valid issue. I think Rachel warmed him from that moment on.
In canon, where Steve and Danny becoming a couple isn't in the cards, I'd really like to see Rachel and the kids incorporated into the off-work 5-0 Ohana, and especially I'd like to see Danny and Rachel realize they're what Steve needs to be a part of again -- a family -- and to invite him in, as a beloved brother and uncle. I mean, look at how Steve is with Gracie -- can you imagine him with the new baby? These two kids will own his heart for life. :-)
NO matter how you look at it, for the show to continue, Danny has to remain in Hawaii, and the best way for that to happen is for his *family* to return and be there with him -- which you give us beautifully. :-) (Now let's hope the show does the same thing...)
I guess if I had to pick a favorite Het pairing, it would probably be Danny/Rachel, mostly because she has been pretty awesome most of the time when we've actually seen her (as opposed to how she was when she was only offscreen & we saw her through Danny's eyes). Not that Steve/Catherine isn't awesome in its own way, but we've actually probably seen more Danny/Rachel in S1 than Steve/Catherine, so we have more to go by with Danny/Rachel IMHO.
Anyway... REALLY good job. But I do have a small bit of "concrit" to offer.
In the last sentence you wrote "six sets of arms". That should probably actually be either "six arms" (meaning six individual arms) OR "three sets of arms". You have three people being referred to in that sentence & each person has one set of arms; therefore it would only be three sets of arms. You wouldn't have "six sets of arms" unless you referred to six different people in the sentence/scene.
I hope that was OK to say; I'm still feeling my way around whether authors want things like that in their Comments or not. I was a longtime fic Beta in my previous major TV fandom & my eye still catches stuff that seems "off", even when it's not been asked to, when I read fics.
SIX sets of arms?? *headdesk* What is this, a crossover with Star Trek & in the next chapter I tell u guys all abt their pod community? THANK YOU for pointing that out. The lovely TT didn't see that last part (she's my beta & u wouldn't BELIEVE the kinds of things she catches for me to change b4 I post)so that error is 100% mine. I actually think concrit is good...I mean as long as ur not burning me at a stake, it's fine. Saying "Hey mysti, this would work better if..." is cool too but I prefer to hear that when it's being beta'd cuz once it's posted I don't want to mess with it too much. The Williams Family thanks you for restoring them to human form :) & I thank you for sharing ur thoughts.
In an awesome world where Danny Williams gets to have nice things, this would all be happening just like this. Yes, it's difficult to be apart, but Rachel is understanding, Grace is understanding. Her nightmare sucked and Danny wishes it'd never happened, but he's the best Danno in the world and he made it all better. And sang his angel back to sleep. *melts* And in the end it's the three of them, right where they belong, full of love and determination.
This was beautiful, m'dear. I hope you know this means you can never stop with the writingks, k? (Even if you do give all the characters extra sets of arms. ;p Could be handy. *ba dum chee*)
You totally took this prompt that I was sure would lead to an angsty place - a pissed-at-the-world Danny, a selfish bitch Rachel, a hurt and confused Monkey - and made it into fluff-fic? LOL ILU!! *happy grinning & bouncing* Well, I mean, MONKEY'S in it. Have u seen her? Who can be angsty in her presence? I bet when she plays Angry Birds the birds only pretend to be upset cuz they're under contract with Apple. They're all secretly sending her love notes & trying not to implode from the overdose of sweet that she is.
he's the best Danno in the world and he made it all better. And sang his angel back to sleep. *melts* Meeeeeeeeeeeee toooooooooooooooooo :D:D:D Can I pick a TV husband OR WHAT?
I think I have 4 or 5 more prompts to fill from the Team Hacker voting post and only 1 is Merlin, so yea, u'll see some more 5-0 over the next week I think (trying to get the prompts filled ASAP). And then
I also enjoyed reading all the comments above mine. There are many fans who enjoy both gen and slash; I received the most comments ever on a genfic. Family is most certainly the theme of H50 and so emotionally satisfying to watch and read.
