Angel walked down the corridor absently checking doors as he passed them. He had one hand in his pants pocket, the other swinging free as he turned Lorne’s words over in his head and tried not to let hope kill him. He automatically changed his footfall to even lighter than normal as he neared Connor’s room. Cordelia held his son curled up facing her on the bed. She had her eyes fixed on him, her expression so tender it was impossible to miss how she felt about him. He could hear her singing All Through The Night and it made his breath hitch in his throat. He hadn’t told her yet but these were the words his own mother sang to him when he was still a wee one himself.
Sleep my child and peace attend thee,
All through the night
Guardian angels God will send thee,
All through the night
Soft the drowsy hours are creeping
Hill and vale in slumber sleeping,
I my loving vigil keeping
All through the night.
Seeing that Connor’s eyes were closed and that he had squeezed his tiny hand beneath her neck as he did every night before falling asleep he crept into the room.
“Hey Angel,” Cordy whispered. “Just in time. I was going to move him…”
“Here, let me.”
With practiced ease, he lifted his son & transferred him to his crib, placing a soft kiss on his chubby cheek without him stirring in the slightest.
“Mmmm.” Cordy sat up and stretched. “I really should get going.”
Angel turned from the crib and in a few short strides stood before her.
“Cordy please don’t - I mean of course you can go but I’d like-”
Her chuckle rose to his ears from the floor where she had bent to retrieve her shoes.
“What’s the matter big guy? You only do that when you’re nervous.”
“I’m not nervous!” He said, a little too quickly. At her raised eyebrow he half sighed and gestured awkwardly to the door.
“Can we just…talk before you go home?”
She read the earnestness in his eyes.
“Sure.”
He led her to his office & sat beside her there.
“Lorne, he said that, well I was wondering and you know no pressure or-“
“Angel.” One word but decisive enough to pull him out of his flustered blabbering. He inhaled and tried again.
“Look, a lot has happened between us. And I’ve watched you grow so much Cordy. You know there is nothing I wouldn’t do for you but I want…more. I mean I don’t have the right to ask you to be more than just my friend, I mean hell, you’re already one of the best friends I’ve ever had and I know that you could be with any guy and most guys don’t have a curse hanging over their heads and that would be so much better for you but-” his run-on sentence interrupted by a fresh batch of nerves, his eyes sought hers as he reached for her hands.
Cordy cocked one saucy eyebrow.
“You deserve the world Cordelia and I…kind of want to give it to you.” He sighed and took an inordinate interest in the floor.
“I wasn’t going to say anything but Lorne said that with all the singing you do to Connor he couldn’t help but notice how you felt about…me.” He raised his eyes to hers, looking a lot like a boy expecting to be scolded.
“Are you asking me to be your girlfriend?”
Angel nodded the movement so slight it could easily have been missed. Cordy stood and pulled him to her so quickly that if Angel hadn’t had so much practice keeping her from falling when fresh visions hit they would have toppled over. She placed a hand on each of his cheeks and smiled into his eyes.
“It’s about damn time,” was the last thing Angel heard before Cordy pulled him even closer for a kiss he would never forget.
